Bono contemplates the destruction in the Sarajevo library on December 31, 1995, during a private visit to Sarajevo. Bono, who helped organize concerts in support of Sarajevo during the war, took advantage of peace to visit the city.

And in some shows they interrupted the mocking tone of the concert to broadcast live, unscripted reality: satellite transmissions from war-torn Sarajevo, a city in Bosnia where different ethnic and religious groups had been at war for decades.

By the end of the ever-changing show, Bono had recorded and released U2’s Grammy-winning album Zooropa, recorded a duet with legend Frank Sinatra, made prank calls to the White House, and fallen in love with a broken city in Bosnia.

Bono never forgot about this city, or how its endless conflict tugged at his heart. Several years later, he partnered with an American journalist who had participated in the Zoo TV Sarajevo satellite broadcasts. Together they created the award-winning documentary Miss Sarajevo.

The film focused on life in Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia, during a modern war. For four years, citizens in the city struggled to maintain an appearance of normality while gunfire from snipers exploded across the rooftops, and while they went for months without running water or electricity.

In the disquieting theme song of the documentary, Bono merged opera and rock into a haunting melody. In 1995 U2 performed it with opera legend Luciano Pavarotti in Modena, Italy. Another live performance wouldn’t happen again until they sang it for the war-torn city itself.
